I will never want to see him in a nursing home or using a bed pan other wise we could be hearing him sing Every dream home a heart ache hahaha Our Bryan has a long way to go before reaching a retirement home at the moment Terry
I think the moot point here, as others have said, is Mr & Mrs Average. These are the ones who like Bryan/Roxy but not that much, not enough to go and see Bryan numerous times in one tour. Who can't name all the albums in order, can't discuss the finer points of say Beauty Queen or whether Roxy were better with or without Eno.
I would suggest that people, like us, who contribute to this and other forums, read Vivaroxymusic and Roxyrama everyday are in the minority. So when it comes to chosing songs for shows, I think Bryan is bound to chose at least a fair proportion of songs that with be recognised by other than avid fans.
I did think that for most of the Dylanesque tour last year (until the last few shows in Aus/NZ) Bryan was brave to stick to a large majority of songs from Dylanesque plus some rarely performed songs. I think for most of the time there were maybe 1 or 2 Roxy songs...JG and LITD, a couple of his known solo songs...LST, Slave to Love sometimes.
Once a year I go with a friend to see Status Quo...we've been doing this for about the last 5/6 years. In between shows I don't listen to Quo much, I'm not an avid collector of their albums. So when I see them I like to hear and enjoy hearing their well known songs. As I walked out at the end of Bryan's Birmingham show March last year, I overheard a couple saying something along the lines of,'Hmmm...didn't think much of that. He didn't sing Virginia Plain, Avalon or Dance Away.' I think this proves the point most punters don't want to hear an obscure song that he's never performed live before, they want to hear what they know, what's familiar to them.

Perhaps you could become a care assistant a retirement home for faded rock stars?
In about 20 years of course.
Just have a peek while Bry uses the bed pan!

Don't get me wrong, I would gladly look after Bryan when he's in his 80's, I would just have trouble dealing with the bed pan thing!!!! Bed baths, helping him dress, and stuff, I would gladly help him with!!!!!!!
As for the retirement home, I reckon our Bry would still have a thing for the ladies, and would be charming the nurses!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember seeing Roxy for the first time back in 1979 at the Hammersmith Odeon. I was looking forward to hearing 'Virginia Plain'. Of course this night they drop it and their new single 'Dance Away' as well. I had to wait till 2001 before I eventually heard VP, as it wasn't played on the 80, 82 and Bete Noire tours (at least not the gigs I attended).
I believe you need to play a few of the hits for the non-diehards and the die-hards for that matter - I also had to wait till 2001 to hear 'Street Life'.
A few changes in the set list yes, but a longer set list would be even better. Some artists perform twice as long as Bryan/Roxy, so there is not an issue. Still I guess Bryan's voice would not be able to handle the strain.
I don't think Dance Away was ever performed on the '79 tour was it? Something to do with the studio technology used for the rhythm not being possible on stage at that time?
Hi Jim,
my memory`s going a bit, but when I read that I thought they must have played it in 79 but actually checking the live recordings I`ve got, it isn`t there until 80, so you may be right.
hi Jim good to see you back where have you been hibernationg for all this time hahahahha. No sign of dance away on the High road dvd from Manchester 1979 so obviously it was not on the whole tour programme back then lets Hoppe Bryan does a tour with Roxy
