BLURT: When 801 got together in summer '76, had Roxy actually disbanded or were you just on hiatus?

MANZANERA: I think we're always on hiatus [laughs]. I mean, right now, until about an hour ago, I was wondering how long a hiatus could last, but then I've just spoken to Bryan [Ferry] and we might be hatching a new plot. The whole story of Roxy is one of complete no-career-path-at-all: you know, people just seem to do what they feel like doing and pay no attention to building a long-term career -- which is probably the correct thing to do. Which, I suppose, is why you become a rock musician, because you don't care about a career, really. You just want to get on and do it, and you don't think about that. So, at any given moment, Roxy are in flux and at that moment in '76, I can't remember which particular flux we were in. But we must have been in one.

Hopeful???

That does sound hopeful. Though until I actually see that the Roxy album is due for release on a certain date....I won't be jumping for joy.

So does this mean there will still be a Bryan solo album out in March 2010? Is there going to be any change in the 'Roxy Music 2009 - coming soon' on Phil's website before we reach 2010?

Now I have always liked the Big Phil story. Originally a gawky big kid that played some guitar, helped around a bit, and then went on to be lead guitarist, co writer, producer, solo artiste etc etc etc.

Though now I wonder if the gawky big kid has developed into a sort of spinmeister extraordinaire! Without being too lawyerish have a look at the evidence:

It is Phil who famously said that Roxy were "unfinished business"
It was phil who said publicly that they had Ten or so Really good tracks laid down
it was Phil who mentioned in a radio interview that the reformed Roxy had (agreed/talked about) a 3 album deal
it was Phil who had the web page promising Roxy were coming in 2009

And now Phil has " Just spoken" to Bryan and we might be "hatching" a new plot!

Mmmmmmmm! Do we buy this?

Phil's musings.
Andy's comments on the sleeve of the recent freebie CD
Sudden appearance of Bryan in a recording studio, dancing around, and saying something like "let's record that one".

I am reminded of exactly 8 years ago. Just a few days after 9/11 and Roxy are due to play at the Ahoy Arena in Rotterdam. Some of us wondered about flying anywhere in those scary days and indeed some of the people I was going with pulled out of going.

4 of us went for the weekend and inside the arena I was seated in an upstairs balcony seat to the side of the stage that gave you a view behind the familiar big curtain proclaiming "Roxy Music" with the giant eagle we all know. Well that curtain billowed and rippled on numerous occasions with each one bringing a fresh throng of anticipation from the crowd out front. What they couldn't see, but I could, was that the rippling curtain was no accident and was designed to heighten the anticipation and mood in the theatre.

Well, we waited, and waited, and waited...........................................

Ultimately on came the gang, piano blazing, sax blaring, drums beating following that familiar voice and line

"I tried but I could not find a way!
Looking back, all I did was look away
NEXT TIME IS THE BEST WE ALL KNOW
BUT IF THERE IS NO NEXT TIME---WHERE TO GO?"

Sorry to be negative but Is there a next time? Are they just keeping the door open, spinning the spin, rippling the curtain and teasing the crowd? Do we really believe that Bryan was " just on the phone" and that it just so happened to be the case that a journalist was handy when he advised Phil that a "new plot " was afoot? And of course if that was true Phil wouldn't just keep that to himself would he? No! He would tell the first journalist that happened to pop round for a cuppa on the off chance of some decent chat!!!!!!

No I don't believe any of this bollocks-- sorry! No chance and no way was Bryan just coincidentally on the phone. This a another staged throw away line, given in the knowledge that it will be picked up and thrown about, poured over, used for raising pulses and heightening anticipation!Talk about "Spin me round"-- spin all around more like.

And Now for the good news!

Back in Rotterdam-- after the curtain had rippled and billowed a few thousand times, after a few false starts and lighting tricks and so on

THEY DID EVENTUALLY APPEAR!

Hi Jim.
Good points all.
Perhaps Phils just got a wicked sense of humour, I suspect it's quite good fun keeping a group of ferverish fans ( who are old enough to know better ) slavering over such trivia. However, I'm not sure about the rest of you "fans" out there, but it's all gone on for so long now and I've really given up on the hope of a Roxy album before 2011 and the Ferry project would have to excite me more than the lazy but well played easy listening Dylanesque.
