Helen,
I have no problem with them deciding not to do another album. I would obviously prefer it if they did release a new album. I am particularly keen on a new album if Phil says they have ten or so good tracks that are exiting. I believe that this bunch of musicians have more to offer than just nostalgia-- they are after all Roxy Music. If however they think they do not have material that is worthy of their name then that is disappointing but has to be respected.
What I am railing against is Bryan's languid, lazy, dismissive language and attitude which I think stinks. If he had said that they had been in the studio, laid down some tracks which while interesting were not as yet good enough or strong enough to be a Roxy release-- then I have no problem. If he said that they had completed some studio work together but had decided for now not to pursue it-- it would be a shame and a disappointment--- but I would have no problem with it.
I might be a bit miffed as we had all been told it was coming, or being worked on etc but I would accept it.
However as I have said before he deliberately uses dismissive tones and words-- A Roxy Thing, working with Eno for a few days, weeks maybe--- yet it was his own website that confirmed in 2006 that they were in the studio with Eno working on a new album! Since then no one came out and said "we've given up" etc..
Now Bryan says HE doesn't want to do it-- no suggestion of WE don't want to do it, or that the material isn't good enough.
It just comes across as arrogant, dismissive and rude. An opportunity missed musically.
Buy hey ho, no one is dead or even stubbed their toe and tomorrow is a new day. Like Mrs Doyle I will have a fresh cup of tea and if god is good to me the day will present an opportunity to kick a bishop in the arse.
I hear what you are saying about BF I am just as frustrated and disappointed about the whole Roxy thing as the rest on here, and do think we should be informed of something more official than Bryan's snippet of words, disappointing that they are, and where are Phil, Andy & Paul? they are apart of Roxy too, Phil's site is still saying 'Roxy Music 2009' for heavens sake!!!! Take it down its the most annoying thing in the world!!! why don't they come forward and give some explanations of their own? Lets hear what the others have to say too!

i remember back in 19.79 i read that bryan ferry said .. roxy music are very good vehicle.. WHICH I DRIVE . says it all to me .. remember he was like a big kid cos eno got some of his limelight ... grow up mr ferry and stop calling the shots .. you are letting your loyal fans down big time .. he has to be centre stage and it seems that will never change .. god i could go on and on of hints of me me me ... but im sure id get a few backs up ... iv been a roxy / ferry fan since 19.73 .. iv saw heard read a lot .. this all stinks . and i think we should all do something to demand answers .. does anyone want to try and start something up .. wee need to know once and for all whats going on .. wow hes like a bloody mp tells you nothing .. mark my words if this new album is a flop .. i bet you the new roxy album would pop out quite quick after it
I have just heard on the grapevine the title of Bryan's new album.
Its entitled The Exceptionally Very Very Very VERY Best of Bryan Ferry Volume 10, and includes a new version of his 1976 hit 'Lets Stick Together'- the rip off mix. Oh and a bonus track, a new version of a previous cover version with a twist on the title 'Its Gone To My Head. The album is due for release at Christmas in 2015 but could be put back until Yuletide 2016 due to the design of the album sleeve, as Bryan isn't sure which 1970's photo to use on the front.
For those who just can't let go of the Bryan myth, on the TV front Bryan is booked to appear in a new series next year (thats right, as soon as that) entitled 'I'm A Pop Celebrity Get Me Out Of This Recording Studio', where contestents have to endure a series of tasks such as writing their own songs.
You may hate me for this caustic attack but really I feel Bryan has taken all his fans for a big long ride for far too long. Listen Bryan; your last solo album (own stuff) Frantic, released the same time as Bowie's 'Heathen', was frail compared to the sublime heights attained by your 70s contemporary. And sorry Bryan but if its a solo career for you and your Roxy colleagues are now airbrushed out of the picture, I hate to tell you but a Robert Plant type recording artist you are not . Whereas Plant has broken new ground with Alison Krauss and has explored new ventures as well with the Strange Sensation, your stuff is now starting to sound staid in comparison. Ok some may call up your alliance with ie Red Hot Chilli Peppers but in short its still your formula thats dictates and whats to say your next album is going to sound any different, I think what we would all like to see on this score is music that is REALLY DIFFERENT.
To end I think you need Roxy more than you realise.
I find Robert Plant dull, and Bowie's persona is also capricious, contrary, single -minded and apparently dismissive of fellow musicians ...o.k for Bowie ,but not Bryan ?..mmm.
many of those interviews make Bryan's peer group look wet"you will have to ask Bryan"
Why ? no opinion of your own ,no courage to make a statement, no ability to take some personal responsibility..oh dear..I suspect many involved in the holy grail -out -of reach album are unhappy with some of the content/could'nt care less/ are also doing their own thing, but have left Bryan (not for the first time ) in the front line to 'break the news'.
I am sure we have all been in one of those meetings were, for weeks there has been unrest and people are moaning about this and that ,it's not right ect, ect. You stand up and declare , wait for the clamour of agreement...and ...not a peep.

I too am confused. Why would Bryan want to shelve a 'good quality' completed project?
Well, maybe he didn't. Could the record company have rejected the album and the boys being faced with the embarrasment of having to release it on Phil's label, via download only, or worse still give it away with a Sunday newspaper, felt it better to shelve the project.
Maybe the boys have had a major falling out over the direction of, or time taken to record the album, and Bry decided 'why bother, I can record on my own'.
Somehow, I think the results just weren't up to scratch. Bryan's problem with lyric writing I'm sure was important, I noticed next years album will include tracks he has been working on since Alphaville.
If and when Roxy tour again and none of the recent recordings are performed then that will point to them not being very good, contractual issues, or the members taking their own input away to work on separately.
I'm still puzzled because, I'm certain they could have produced at least 2 or 3 half-decent tracks at worst and it would have been great to hear at least one of them, even if only performed live.
One other thought was there may have been management/contractual issues and Roxy didn't feel in control of the project and decided if we can't do it our way, we won't do it at all.

Alan,
We are all confused. Much of what you say makes sense. Maybe there are contractual issues with a record company. Was there not a rumour or report they had agreed a three album deal with someone.
Maybe that has ran out and they didn't have a deal. But surely no one believes that they could not find a label to put it out on.
Could they produce 2-3 good tracks? Manzanera says they recorded about 15-16 of which 9 were really exciting!
Bryan's problem with lyric writing-- eh well if they have 9 or 12 or 15 etc finished songs then the lyric writing must have come back. And what about this solo album-- has he done any lyric writing for that?
Ferry IS writing for his own album. He HAS a record deal for HIS album. Manzanera has connections with all sorts of producers and labels. Mackay and the mechanics had their own deal. Do we really really believe that this lot can't get a record deal, can't write tune or lyric together but can do all of those things separately without too much bother?
I think any label would give them artistic control because to be honest they could sell music played on the paper and comb on the back of their name--IF THEY WANTED TO!
At the end of the day we are left with Bryan Ferry's own words. Nobody else's-- Just his.
HE decided That HE did not want to do a Roxy Thing. HE decided some time ago. Instead HE went off to do Dylanesque and HE has now decided to do another solo album. HE doesn't think the component parts of Roxy Music will work in the studio again-- although HE works with Brian Eno a bit on HIS own stuff. HE doesn't want to work with Andy and Phil. HE can't remember if HE was in a studio with Eno for a couple of days or a few weeks-- It is not that important. Maybe they will tour again one day-- maybe not! Dunno!
Although not an exact quote those are his stated words, sentiments and intentions.
From that you can only take them at face value (unless he is lying for some reason) and that means Roxy Music are a thing of the past because the main man, the guy who started it all, whose idea and image it was, is just no longer interested.
That is what he is saying!
Why that should be I do not know-- because it is contrary to what we were lead to believe before. But that is what Bryan has decided for good or bad.
Maybe his new album will be brilliant and we will all be glad he went down that route.
Maybe you will find the Roxy material being mysteriously released over the net?
But from Ferry's lips to all our ears--- Roxy are a thing of the past-- nothing is there for us to share but yesterdays!
I think there a saying that goes something along the lines of......................................... "Expectation is the route of all sorrow". There have been may valid points made on this thread and I find myself agreeing with most of them.
Was there ever a "completed" project or just a number of tracks that were not actual songs as such. Has Bryan suddenly changed and started to fire out lyrics at the speed of light? How many times have we read of him having difficulties writing. There have been crumbs of information fed out here and there to keep an interest going should something happen...... eventually, perhaps, maybe!
"Roxy Music 2009 coming soon............" on Phil's site could have referred to many things, in fact we had Roxy Music Night on TV and now the release of the "More Than This - The Roxy Music Story" on DVD.
Would we really want a Roxy Music album with only 2-3 good tracks on it? I would find that quite sad.
A quote from an Eno interview back in 2006,
" It was a big decision for me to do those two days in the studio with them. Not that I don't like them. I like them all. They're nice people. But because I thought, 'Oh, f*ck, I'm going to have to spend years talking about this, and it was only two days."
