The Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music Social Network - roxyrama.org

Perhaps this might seem disloyal , but , brilliant though they were , mebbe some songs weren't quite up to scratch .

1 The Main Thing..... plodding formulaic waste of listening time .

2 Rain , Rain , Rain... dreary .

3 Triptych.....scraping the bottom of the barrel here Bry .

Oh , don't all hate me at once  ;))

Bitter-sweet: A transparent attempt to repeat A Song For Europe for Country Life, this gloomy dirge is nearly unlistenable to me. But maybe it's just the negative associations I have with German cabaret music that turns me off of this one so much.
Three and Nine: The lyrics strike me as juvenile nonsense, the chord structure is schmaltzy, no to this easy listening lounge music for me.
Triptych: This one earns plenty of demerits for the cheap-sounding stereo separation trick alone--the kind of thing that bands might have thought was brilliant in the early days of stereo records. Middle Ages hymns are not what I spin a Roxy Music record for.
These three have always pulled Country Life to the bottom of the Roxy catalog for me. I've always been baffled by a review I remember that referred to the album as being like a "greatest hits collection of all-new songs" or something like that. I quite like the other 7 songs, although only three of those would make my top 25.

Would You Believe and most of the stuff from the last two albums.

Actually "The Main Thing" is one of the few things I like from Avalon. What's wrong with it?

I just have never liked it, I was never a huge fan of The Avalon album either.

Nor me, for the matter, but I like that one song. The bass is driving, the vocals are hypnotic.
Can't say I like the videoclip though :P

This is why having a broad array of fans propels an artist/group forward into icon-dom...
